Belt and Road Initiative at 11

Writer's picture: THE GEOSTRATATHE GEOSTRATA

China's economic rise over the past few decades stands as one of the most transformative development journeys. This journey of transitioning from an agrarian economy to an industrial and manufacturing hub has redefined China’s global standing. It has experienced unmatched growth by implementing reforms, and economic integration focused on export-led development.

Along with that, it has woven a narrative of national revival and prosperity appealing to both developed and developing nations alike. The strategic storytelling, and an inflow of foreign investments, has significantly enhanced China's geopolitical influence, particularly in Asia, Africa, and parts of Europe-the regions also covered in this report. A crucial aspect of this strategy is the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), launched in 2013 by President Xi Jinping.

Reimagined as the ancient Silk Route, the BRI seeks to connect countries across Asia, Africa, and Europe through extensive infrastructure projects, including railways, highways and ports, placing China at the centre of global trade routes. It remains a key pillar of Xi Jinping’s foreign policy and a symbol of China’s diplomatic and economic aspirations on the global stage.

The BRI has seen notable successes in expanding infrastructure and fostering trade links with China. Several projects, such as the Muse-Mandalay project, were covered in our previous issue, ‘Belt and Road Initiative at 10’. Similar rail projects in Africa and Central Asia were aimed at making regions accessible, thereby facilitating the transportation of goods, boosting trade, and attracting investment.

Some of these projects illustrate the BRI’s potential to stimulate local economies, create employment, and provide new opportunities in underdeveloped regions.
