India-Panama Relations

The oldest relations in the Latin American region go back to the 19th century when groups of individuals arrived in Panama for the construction and work on the Panama Canal and railways. The diplomatic relations between the two countries were set up in 1962, with Panama establishing a Resident Mission in New Delhi.

Relations between the two countries have extended since then, with trade amounting to U.S. $597.71 million. The major items include minerals, apparel and textiles, manufactured articles, electrical equipment, and related accessories.

The country’s strategic location has enabled its cultural and political linkages with India, fostering outreach efforts in the Latin American region. In such a case, the relations between the two countries can evolve from exchanging goods and services to exploring the opportunities in sectors involving agriculture, technology, pharmaceutical products and the automobile industry.

The key highlights of the report include:

1) The importance of developing relations between the two countries considering the potential in the agricultural sector by leveraging the use of biotech and artificial intelligence for increased yields and production.

2) Development of partnerships between India and Panama in the pharmaceutical sector to produce, distribute and trade high-quality, accessible and affordable medicines.

3) Exploring the opportunities in the automobile and textile industry for research and development (R&D), increasing distribution and production of affordable parts in the domestic markets of both countries.
