The Golden Dome Missile Defence Initiative is a plan to create a new missile defence system announced by the United States in 2025. Unlike the Iron Dome, which is primarily designed to intercept short-range artillery projectiles, the Golden Dome aims to defend the entire United States against a wide spectrum of aerial threats.

WHAT THE PROJECT AIMS TO DO?
The goal of the Golden Dome Missile Defence Initiative is to protect the United States from missile attacks. Unlike existing missile defence systems that are primarily designed to counter threats from smaller or rogue states, the Golden Dome Missile Defence Initiative seeks to defend against advanced missile capabilities possessed by major powers such as China and Russia.
It will use satellites to find missiles, special radars to track them and many layers of protection to intercept them. Advanced computing technologies will enable these components to operate as an integrated defence network.

Strategic stability is a condition in which nuclear-armed states are deterred from launching a first strike because they know that the other side still can retaliate. A very effective missile defence system developed by one country could make its adversaries insecure and increase their incentive to strike first in a crisis.
The Golden Dome Missile Defence Initiative would improve global security by protecting the United States from missile attacks, supporters say. Critics, however, say the deployment of such a system might encourage other countries to expand and modernise their missile arsenals to maintain deterrence, possibly reducing strategic stability and making the international security environment more volatile.
For the United States, Golden Dome is framed as a way to shore up national security and keep its military deterrent credible. China's opposition has been blunt. Beijing argues the initiative threatens global strategic stability and risks triggering a fresh arms race, and its core worry is simple: a highly effective US missile shield would undercut the credibility of China's comparatively small nuclear arsenal. That pushes China toward expanding and modernising its own missile forces just to preserve the existing balance, and it's already doing so, accelerating work on advanced ballistic and hypersonic systems as part of a wider military buildup.
Russia's objections track a similar logic. Moscow sees an effective US missile defence system as something that could erode the strength of its strategic nuclear forces and unsettle the long-standing balance built on mutually assured destruction. Russia's response has been to continue investing in hypersonic glide vehicles, manoeuvrable re-entry vehicles and next-generation ballistic missiles, all aimed at maintaining its deterrent's credibility even against a more capable US defence system.
Golden Dome is the US bid to build a next-generation missile defence system, one meant to handle threats that current defences can't. Washington calls it necessary for national security and technological supremacy. Both China and Russia have bluntly warned that it threatens nuclear deterrence as it now functions. If they respond by building up their own offensive missile forces and pushing further into space-based military tech, Golden Dome could end up doing the opposite of what it promises.
Whether it really does make anyone safer depends on two things: does the system work, and do the major powers choose restraint over escalation?
